INTRO Chinua Achebe’s first novel, Things Fall Apart, is a post-colonial novel that details the violent story of the British’s colonization of Nigeria at the end of the 19th century from an African perspective. Published just before Nigerian independence, the novel narrates the fall of the highly respected village leader Okonkwo as well as the destruction of the Ibo culture. Achebe’s use of English, the language of the colonizer, put Things Fall Apart at the center of the great language debate in African literature. Should African writers use English, a colonial language forced upon them by their oppressor, in writing literary works or do they have a duty to write in their native tongue? Can English, a foreign language, properly convey the African experience? In his essay, â€Å"The African Writer and the English Language†, Achebe answers these questions and defends his stance to use English. He argues that African writers â€Å"should aim at fashioning out an English which is at once universal and able to carry his peculiar experience† (Achebe 433). He refers to his use of English in his writing as a â€Å"new voice coming out of Africa, speaking of African experiences in a world-wide language† (433). In his novel, Achebe has been successful in following this theory of English. Through the use of words, rhythm, proverbs, and oral stories of the Ibo language, Achebe has transformed English into a language that conveys Ibo culture and ultimately the African experience. Memories from life-altering experiences, sometimes changes the way that individual may perceive or even think throughout their everyday life. The short story, â€Å"The Open Boat,† causes readers to change their perception of life and look at the big picture. Humans tend to think of themselves as the â€Å"superior† race, when in reality they are not. Stephen Crane displays what little worth a human’s life actually is, when compared to nature. Being the youngest of fourteen children, Crane was born in Newark, New Jersey in 1871. His father Jonathan Crane, â€Å"was a Methodist minister and religious tract writer who advocated temperance and denounced the theater, frivolous novels, and dancing,† he died suddenly when Crane was only 9 years old (Marren†¦show more content†¦Along the way, Crane was shipwrecked off the coast of Florida with three other men â€Å"and lost at sea on a 10-foot lifeboat for 30 hours† (Eye 65). One of the men, an oi ler named Billy Higgins, drowned in the surf while trying to swim to shore. After being saved, Crane used his experiences as his basis for fiction and wrote the short story, â€Å"The Open Boat† and continued working as a correspondent and journalist. He spent the last of his years in England, and in 1900, Crane died due to Tuberculosis at the age of twenty-eight. â€Å"The Open Boat,† tells the story of four men who survived a shipwreck off the coast of Florida. Left on a small life-boat, the four men must keep the boat floating or else the waves will capsize the boat. Up against winter waters, each man works tirelessly to stay alive. With each person given a task, following the directions from their injured captain, the correspondent and the oiler row the boat, while the cook scoops the water out of the boat. The captain was still in shock from witnessing the death all of his men in the shipwreck, he was never the same after that. Over time, the men begin to make progress towards land, the captain spots a lighthouse in the distance. Believing it was a lifesaving station the men begin to row towards the lighthouse, but soon realize it was abandoned. Others may not know what the adversity is but they observe the way a person is acting. The composure held in rough situations allows people to formulate opinions based on these reactions. This is shown through the challenges of dealing with guilt, trying to achieve being better than others and trying to escape their past identities. A main adversity faced in Fifth Business is guilt. The guilt that the characters Dunstan and Boy feel mainly revolve around the snowball incident with Mrs. Mary Dempster. Everybody had heard about the snowball incident however only Dunstan and Boy knew the truth about who threw the snowball. Although Dunstan was truly not at fault he felt responsible because the snowball was meant for him. His mother then began making him invest time into caring for the Dempster’s and he did it without protest because he felt he need to make the situation right. â€Å"We knew your Ma must have sent you. She couldn’t do anything publicly, of course, but she sent you to look after them. Everybody knew an’ honoured her for it. † (p99) The people saw that his mother and his actions were honourable. As Dunstan ages, people’s perception of his dealings with Mary Dempster changes and his link to her makes him seem queer. Eventually even his mother was upset with Dunstan’s obsession with Mrs. Dempster. She was very upset that Dunstan would bring this woman into their home. â€Å"What under Heaven had possessed [Dunstan] to turn to that woman, not only to their home but to the very beside of a boy who was dangerously ill? † (p55) Then, Dunstan had â€Å"insisted that Willie had indeed died. No pulse; no breathing. † (p. 55) He had expressed how he felt about Willie’s â€Å"death† and was disregarded by people telling him to let it go. Dr.  McClausland says to Dunstan â€Å"I think you may safely leave it to me to say when peopled are dead, Dunny. † (p55) Milo Papple even says â€Å"Do you remember when you said that Mrs. Dempster raised Willie from the dead? God, you used to be a crazy kid†¦ â€Å" (p99) He continued on to find 2 more miracles by Mary Dempster. This revelation guided him to begin studying saints and in turn his reputation was jeopardized. â€Å"It’s this saint business of yours. Of course your books are splendid. But if you were a father would you want to send your son a school headed by an authority on saints? (p187) That is what Boy had said to Dunstan regarding why he was being let go from being Headmaster. Alternatively, Boy’s key role in making Mrs. Dempster simple forced a different reaction from him. Boy as a kid chose to ignore the fact that it was his fault. Dunstan views him as a coward and ruthless. â€Å"I knew that he was afraid, and I knew also that he would fight, lie, do anything rather than admit what I knew. † (p17) He spends so much energy on pushing the situation out of his mind that by the time he is older, he has no recollection of her all together. [Dunstan] could hardly believe he spoke the truth, but as we talked on I had to accept it as a fact that he had so far edited his memory of his early days that the incident of the snowball had quite vanished from his mind. † (p251) Boy’s indifference to the situation benefited him in a sense that because he knew that if he acted like he had no connection with Mrs. Dempster that his identity would not be compromised. The reactions from Dunstan and Boy are almost completely opposite and so people viewed them differently. Paul Dempster also treated his guilt differently than the other two. As Paul Dempster he ran away from home and people saw this as something that was prone to happen because his mother was simple. Although they did not recognize that it was because â€Å"[his] father thought it was his duty to tell [Paul], so [he] could do whatever possible to make it up to her. † (p251) As he created a new persona for himself he also found a new way to cope with his guilt by sending her money and Dunstan â€Å"was able to transfer Mrs. Dempster from the public wards of that hateful city asylum to a much better hospital near a small town. (p220) This shows that he is a good person and with success he still holds composure. Another challenge in the novel involved trying to be better than others. Boy Staunton was the golden boy from Deptford. He was always very successful and recognized. During the first war he became an officer and â€Å"was wearing a few medals, the admirable D. S. O. but otherwise minor things. † (p93) Boy went on to pursue a very successful career in the sugar business. As well, he struggled to pursue a career in politics although unsuccessful he did later become Lieutenant Governor. Old Doc Staunton’s annoyance at being outsmarted by his son had given way to his cupidity.. † (p142) All his successes sprung out of wanting to be better than his peers and his father and he succeeded. Another part of his image involves Leola being as educated and cultured as she possibly can. â€Å"She had learned to curtsy very prettily†¦ and do other courtier things required by Boy. † (p119) Yet still he still faced the challenge of her not being able to keep up. â€Å"She was trying hard but she could not keep with Boy’s social advancement. (p143) People see Boy as the golden Boy and Magnus Eisengrim even says â€Å"I remember you very well. I always thought of you as the Rich Young Ruler. † (p249) In the end, he took the challenge of being more successful and dominated it and in the end he was known and respected. â€Å"[Denyse] did achieve a very fine turnout of important people, and others who were important because they represented somebody important. † (p243) This refers to Boy’s funeral and this shows how he had finished his life as a successful man. Paul was constantly teased by kids because they would say things like â€Å"’Hey Paul, does your Ma wear pants? and stuff like that. † (p99) Milo Papple tells Dunstan that Paul ran away with the circus and â€Å"it made him kind of a hero after he’d gone. † (p99) He became a very successful magician and people thought he was magnificent. They never knew that his success came from him trying to erase the image of him being simple Mary Dempster’s son because â€Å"[he] could call up in an instant what it felt like to be the child of a woman everybody jeered at and thought a dirty joke† (p 251) Paul had to get away to ensure that he made a better name for himself. Their success is attributed to their obstacle to be better than others. Lastly, the challenge of separating their past identities also shapes their current identities. The three central characters use a name change to represent their new identities. They try to change the person they are and in turn people do view that as different people. Dunstan was originally named Dunstable Ramsay but after the war he met a Diana, a nurse whom he had his first real relationship with, who decided to change his name. Diana said â€Å"it’s hard to say for one thing and it sounds like a cart running over cobblestones for another. You’ll never get anywhere in the world named Dumbledum Ramsay. † (p85) She felt that his name didn’t represent the successful person that he could be with a better name. Diana said that he represented the Saint Dunstan in many ways because â€Å"St. Dunstan was a marvellous person and very much like [Dunstan] – mad about learning, terribly stiff and stern and scowly, and an absolute wizard at withstanding temptation. † (p85) He likes this persona of himself and â€Å"the idea of a new name; it suggested new freedom and personality. (p86) Boy Staunton, formerly known as Percy Boyd Staunton also changed his name. Somewhere along his army career decided that Boy Staunton was a name more fit for him. The name Boy represents the stellar and young gentlemen that he is. â€Å"He was boy Staunton because he summed up in himself so much of the glory of youth in the postwar period. † (p102) His name shows his success in his glorified youth. â€Å"He seemed to have made himself out of nothing, and he was a marvel. † (p103) Another name change that denotes an air of eloquence is Paul Dempster’s name change to Magnus Eisengrim. As Paul Dempster he had many misfortunes and zero success. As Magnus Eisengrim he has a wonderful show that awes the public. He says â€Å"My name is Magnus Eisengrim that is who I am and that is how the world knows me. † (p249) His reaction to escaping his past identity when he changed his name â€Å"he did not present himself as a funny-man but as one who offered an entertainment of mystery and beauty, with perhaps a hint of terror as well. † (p192) Dunstan had it right when he said â€Å"[they] had all rejected [their] beginnings and became something that their parents could not have forseen. (p252) The characters past identities did not satisfy how they viewed themselves and their challenge to erase who they were allowed them to create a new name that characterized a new identity. The characters in Fifth Business shape identities when they react to adversities. The way they are recognized is due to the actions they take to face these challenges. The most prominent challenges in Roberson Davis’ novel are the challenge of a guilty conscience, being better than others and escaping past identities. A Meaningful Learning Experience Essay Meaningful learning experience happens many times in lifetime, some teaches minor lessons whether some teaches important lesson. I learned a meaningful experience on a religious and historical tour that I went with my friends. The author of The Banking Concept of Education   Freire Paulo describes the learning experience as a problem posing and critical thinking, which somewhat relates to my experience. The concept of Percy Walker in The Loss of the Creature   shows the learning through sovereignty and exploring is more similar to my learning. I learned the meaning of peoples lifestyle that differs according to the person and the places they lived and also the problems that they have on getting the basic needs that everyone has right to get it. Sovereignty doesnt require being alone on or only few people. In 2010, my friends Prashant, Sujit, Pradhu, four others and me made a plan to go motorcycle tour on a religious tour for four days. Being a follower of Hinduism, we decided to visit a Hindu temple called Muktinath. Is located on hill area of Nepal on the Mustang district. Which is two days drive from the place we lived, about 400 miles. We went on four motorcycles; on the half of the way I saw such beautiful rivers, springs, hills that I havent seen before on my life. I am arguing the concept of the Percys explanation of learning through discovering and exploring when someone is experiencing alone or with few peoples. I was with many friends but my meaningful learning of exploring depends on my own way of observing and experiencing it. After a long drive of 10 hours, we reached a city called Pokhara, which is one of the most beautiful city of my country Nepal. We decided to stay there for a night visit some places, eat food and sleep at night. We went boating on Fewa Lake from where we could see a clear view of mountain piled up with the snow. The sun was about to set so I could see the sun on the top of mountain hiding a little bit on the white cloud and spreading the orange color of light, which was the most beautiful natural beauty that I had ever seen in my life. I couldnt forget that moment in my life. Then after we went to see the cultural dance and get some drinks. The first day of our journey ends with a good early sleep dreaming the more beauty of nature that I could see tomorrow. Secondly, we started our journey at seven on the morning. After few hours of drive the road starts to be unpaved. It was a month of rain so the unpaved road somewhere was full of water, though it was hard to drive on such way I was enjoying it. There we got chance to see thick green forest with some wild animals like deer, wild rabbit, fox crossing the road. The way was so uphill and downhill because the temple was located on the hill area of my country. Unexpectedly we got stopped suddenly because of the landslide. He agreed and our journey turned into hiking. I carried my backpack and started hiking. We travelled through the landslide; some of the experienced villagers were there to help the traveller. Getting the consciousness about the situation or problems, which was applied on me that time. I got knowledge about the natural disaster and the problems caused by them and were conscious about the hard time that we got during landslides. The time was already 7 pm and the sun was on his way to set. But according to the map we had to walk about four hours to reach to the small village where we could ask or rent a room to stay at night. It get darker and darker we were talking and making fun of each other and heading to our destination. Finally we reached on a small village, there were some small house made of stones. We asked a room to stay a night and would travel in the morning. We offered some money and they provide a room with bed n sheets only. We all were tired so tried to sleep but it was raining and the roof was leaking. Its kind of funny, some drop of water dropped on my ear while sleeping. After an hour it stopped raining and I changed the place and tried to sleep but I heard the loud noise of stone breaking and falling. We all were on fear that landslide may come to the house where we were. Electricity was not available on that place. We used our cellphones light to find out our stuffs. During that time some sort of strange feelings came on me, I became emotional thinking the people there. How they are living their life? People have never seen the electricity, neither means of transportation. Children had never been to school, they just took the pet animals to graze on the field from 10 on the morning to 5 at evening. I couldnt consider my life on their situation. As of Percys experience on The loss of creature  , I also found myself as discovering that place under some consideration. I was also observing and exploring that place. Though there is individualism on her concept, my experience was not similar to the Freires collaboration concept on The banking concept. Because I was experience those things myself with few friends. I was exploring and observing new places. When I was picturing those things on my mind, I heard a loud voice of something cracking. It was a landslide again about a few meters ahead where we stayed. We were so scared and didnt sleep whole night, passed all night talking about natural disasters. We waited for some sunlight to come so that we could move forward to our destination. Finally the sun spread some light then we start packing our stuff on bag then we walked to our destination. We walked on a narrow way between two huge hills; some waterfalls gave us some shower, refreshed us and gave some energy to move on. On the way I saw some houses far away behind three hills. It would take two more days to walk to there, no any means of transportation. How do those people survive there? I was in shock when I saw those houses and imagining the lifestyle people living on such condition. What do they do when some people get sick? How do they get medicine? Such questions came on my mind all the time while moving forward. The more we travel the more critical lifestyle, we see people living around there. Children were wearing just a shirt without button and small shorts on a cold weather. I couldnt imagine the changes on their lifestyle after generations also. After walking whole day finally we reached our destination and talked with some people lived there. The said that whatever we saw the peoples living condition on the way are far better than the people live 200, 300 miles away from there. I couldnt even imagine that the life of people living there. I learned a lesson from them that how people could struggle for surviving and the changes on lifestyle according to the places they lived. I was so sad for them but little bit happy that we are living very wonderful life in comparison to them. This tour gave me a meaningful learning experience about the lifestyle of different people, resources they are using. Struggling whole life without basic needs but also happy to live. Friere and Percy gave me some ideas about the meaningful learning experience depending on their view and I made some comparison with my own experience. Also tried to understand their concept by relating their concept on my experience.
